INTRODUCTION Ask people what they think of governance and they will probably tell you: government, authority, control, power. True, it may be all these but there =s more. Guiding principles of good governance Corporate governance refers to the framework of rules, systems and processes put in place to control and monitor – or “govern” – an organisation. Good governance underpins good conduct and the good judgement of those who are charged with running an organisation. The Good Governance Guides indicate, in the view of Governance Institute of Australia Ltd, one interpretation of good practice. They are not designed to cover or comply with all applicable legislation or case law.

Since 2015, GGI has hosted the annual Festival of Governance, which celebrates success in the collective effort to build a better, fairer world through good governance. Governance Effectiveness Reviews An accepted trait of good governance practice in any sector is to periodically review the effectiveness of that governance in an organisation. This helps provide confidence both internally and externally that governance arrangements are fit for purpose and help deliver the organisation’s intended outcomes. Governance reviews are increasingly prescribed by governance codes, with some going so far as to note how often they should be performed by external parties. However there are many interpretations as to what a review may involve, with the phrase ‘strategic’ often being misused.
